OUR PROGRAM
We aim to provide our students
with a true "preschool experience" in an intimate and homey
atmosphere. We are not a "day care center", although we do
provide day care services. We are a "learning-based" program that
is playful, not play-based. Children at Concord Preschool and
Kindergarten learn by playing with others, by participating in
teacher-led group activities, and by going on
field-trips.
Below are some answers to frequently asked questions about Concord.
- We accept children from 2 to 5 years of age.
- Our hours are from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through
Friday. Drop-offs and pick-ups outside of these times (until 6:00
PM) can be arranged but will incur extra charges.
- We have morning, afternoon and full-day programs
available. The morning program ends at 12:30 PM (lunch is not provided).
- Parents of children in the morning program who want their children to stay through lunch can join the "lunch bunch" for a small extra fee ($5). Children in the "lunch bunch" stay an extra half-hour (we do not provide the lunch).
- We typically have an enrollment of 17 to 20 children.
- Our teacher to student ratio is 1 to 6 or better.
- In most instances we follow the academic calendar of the
Ann Arbor Public School System.
- We have a full-time summer program.
We suggest that you
follow up your visit
to our website by calling (734) 662-6002 to hear more specific
information about our program. Read the page on open houses if you would like to
visit and see the school first-hand.
DAILY ACTIVITIES
A typical day at Concord includes:
- Calendar Time - We use this time learning to recognize numbers, letters and phonics by playing simple math games and creating alphabet characters out of craft sticks and yarn.
- Snack Time - We use self-help skills such as pouring our own juice or getting a cup and napkin. We have the "number of the day" placed on the table, which the children read and count that amount for their snacks (Children may have seconds). Soon, the children are able to print the numbers themselves. Of course, we practice our best manners as well.
- Big room - During our time in the Big Room, the children have free choice to select from quiet reading, dramatic play, sensory table, block building and cognitive games.
- Gross Motor Room - We use this room for exercising large muscles through dance, movement and games. We also use this room for dramatic play, acting stories, or nursery rhymes.
- Outdoor - State Licensing requires that all children participate in outdoor play. If it is raining or too frigid, we will use the Gross Motor Room. Please send in the proper clothing for outdoor play and be sure to label everything with the child's name.
- Circle Time - During this time, we discuss our weekly theme and work on a related project (science project, art or craft).
- Gathering Time - The whole school meets together for 15 minutes to sing songs, listen to a story, learn finger plays or problem solve through puppets.
OPEN HOUSES AND ENROLLMENT INFORMATION
If, after going over the information on our information line and
website, you are interested in enrolling your child at Concord you may
attend one of our Tuesday morning open houses. At these open houses you can meet the staff, check out the facilities, get an idea of the program, and have all your questions answered in person. Although we are trying to answer as many questions as possible on this webpage, there is no substitute for seeing the preschool in person.
Appointments
for an open house (required - we do not accept drop-ins) can be made by calling (734)
994-3415. Because
we tend to be busy during the morning, the best time
to call is between 1:00 and 2:30 PM, weekdays. Open houses are
generally held at 10:45 at our location
on Scio Church Road.
